Three Weeks in Poland '02
Words and photographs by Pascal Scheffers and Maja Kuilman
It took me a while before I figured out this was supposed to be a chimney sweep. A bunch of apple trees in the backyard of the farm in Wolka Karwowska. This amazing little building has a water supply that is heated using a wood-boiler. The proprietor told us that he needs to stoke his boiler only three to four times a day on busy days. Really nice campsite on the very edge of Poland (Bialowieza) just 4 kilometers from the Belarussian border. In the Bialowieza national park they just leave the trees where they fall. Some are very big. This nice, but quite boring, guide told us quite a lot about the forest. He forced us to take a picture with him in this hollow tree.
This is a very, very big tree The tree that Maja was standing under, 31 meters tall, 180 years old. Maja can jump The same tree Tree, ca. 300 years old, 34 meters tall.
Narrow gauge train You don't have to search for long to find a roadside cross-with-strings. They come in many shapes and sizes and are typically very well maintained.
The elblag boatlift is a marvelous piece of (Dutch!) 19th century engineering. The five water driven boatlifts span a height of 96 meters. This one alone manages to lift the boats 26 meters. The boatlift machinery These large wheels make the steelcables go to and from the powerhouse. These drawings are replicas of the design drawings for one of the boatlifts.

Hitler's bunker, part of the Wolfsschanze, the second worldwar command headquarters. This is also where a famous assassination attempt took place. The thing is absolutely enormous: I am 1.90 meters tall, for comparison. Interesting, if not somewhat disturbing, piece of history. The gate to Malbork castle Lots of potatos
